Having previously read the authors' fine biography of Henry Clay l couldn't resist this detailed and well documented account of Washington's two terms as President. There is much here to interest anyone with a curiosity about the early days of the republic regardless of how many other books one has read over the years. Focusing on Washington through his relationships with key political figures of his time as well as personal friends and family members provides a unique perspective and Washington emerges as the quiet focal point in a maelstrom of increasing division and political maneuvering that surrounded him. The growing rift between the Republicans of Jefferson and Madison and the Federalists of Hamilton and Adams required Washington to rise above the fray often siding with the Federalists and influenced increasingly by Hamilton even though his natural surroundings as a Virginia planter would have suggested he aligned more with Jefferson and Madison. The authors do a wonderful job of telling how these divisions and challenges played out in the days of his administration. I loved this book and almost hated to finish it because it was so absorbing. George Washington’s reputation has made it difficult for historians to fairly describe his achievements – which are rightly regarded as legendary – or his persona, which is most definitely that of a human being, with pluses and minuses.
